Symphonic Wind Bands Stream

Summer School’s Symphonic Wind Bands stream provides concert band experiences for all ages and musical abilities across four bands.

Beginning musicians will come together to share their first ensemble experience.

Intermediate musicians, will be challenged beyond their existing school or community band environments.

Advanced musicians in this stream will be challenged to develop critical ensemble skills, teamwork, communication and creativity, and will improve their sight-reading through a series of rehearsals and workshops with music professionals.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Prof. Rob McWilliams holds a Ph. D. in Music from the University of Minnesota, a Master’s degree in Instrumental Conducting from Florida State University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Melbourne.
Dr. McWilliams served as Professor of Music and Director of Bands and Instrumental Music Education at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (USA) from 1996 to 2014 where he conducted symphonic and jazz ensembles, and taught courses in conducting, music education, and jazz. From 2011 he also served as Head of the Music Department.
Prof. McWilliams has travelled extensively as a guest conductor and clinician and has conducted and presented at major music conferences in all states of Australia as well as Japan, Hong Kong, the UK, Singapore, Europe, and China, including conferences of the World Association of Symphonic Bands & Ensembles and the Tutti International Youth Music Festival.
Prof. McWilliams has been published in peer-reviewed professional publications and is a composer/arranger with Alfred’s Music. In early 2015 he relocated to Brisbane, Australia and is currently working as Yamaha Music Australia’s Education Outreach Clinician and freelancing as a musician, educator, conductor, composer/arranger, and adjudicator.

Having worked as a music educator in many varied environments in Australia and in the USA, Dr. Joanne Heaton currently serves as Head of Bands at Haileybury College in Melbourne, Australia. She completed a Bachelor of Education with a music education focus and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education Studies at the University of Melbourne, and a Masters of Music majoring in conducting performance at the University of Utah, USA. Before returning to Australia, Joanne also undertook the position of Band Director at Eastmont Middle School at Sandy, Utah. Most recently, Joanne completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree specialising in Wind Band Conducting at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Joanne is in demand as an adjudicator, conductor, guest lecturer and educative consultant and has been a guest lecturer and conductor at Monash University and The University of Melbourne. In 2001 Joanne served as the music education representative for the curriculum writing project ‘Schools to Careers’ for the Utah State Office of Education. Joanne was invited to be a guest conductor of the Southern Mississippi University Honor Band in February 2007, guest conductor of the Interscholastic Association of Southeast Asian Schools Honour Band in Kuala Lumpur in 2014 and guest conductor for the Colorado State University, Pueblo, Festival of Winds in 2018. Major clinic presentations include the 2012 Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, the 2019 World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference in Spain, the 2019 Oxford University International Conducting Studies Conference in Sydney and the 2019 Australian Society for Music Education conference in Perth.
In 2000 Joanne was awarded the Jordan Education Foundation’s Outstanding Educator of the Year for her work in Utah schools, and in February 2017 she was honoured with an ABODA Victoria Excellence in Music Education award. The Victorian branch of the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association awarded Joanne with a Life Membership award in January 2020.

Daniel van Bergen studied music performance at the Victorian College of the Arts, education at Deakin University, and conducting at The University of Melbourne studying with John Hopkins AM OBE, Prof David King, and Maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy. Danny holds Associate Diplomas in Band Studies (Horn) and Musicianship and is an Associate of Trinity College London on Euphonium.
In 2005, Daniel became the youngest conductor to win an Australian National Band Championship and has since won another 7 titles.
Daniel has been Musical Director for a variety of shows and light opera including productions of “Annie”, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”, “The Pirates of Penzance”, “The Witches of Eastwick”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Legally Blonde” and “The Addams Family”.
Daniel is a sought after educator, adjudicator, and conductor who is currently Leader of Performing Arts at Wantirna College and Artistic Director of Boroondara Brass and Knox Wind Symphony.

Brian Hogg has been writing and arranging music since his days in High School. He has extensive experience in working with school and community groups and remains active in these fields as a composer, conductor, clinician and adjudicator.
Brian has experience, as a conductor, with a wide range of ensembles, both instrumental and vocal. Through his work at The Salvation Army he has conducted the Melbourne Staff Songsters (The Salvation Army’s premier choir in Australia) as well as numerous Brass Bands throughout the country. Brian currently leads The Salvo Big Band, a 17 piece stage band.
Brian has published works in the Brolga Music Catalogue since 1990 and continues to write for Concert & Symphonic Bands as well as Brass Bands. His works have been performed & recorded internationally by ensembles in the U.S.A., U.K., Europe & Australia.
In 2016 Brian was awarded the Australian Band and Orchestras Association’s Citation of Excellence for …”his outstanding body of work as a composer of quality literature for young bands”.

Whether working with young students or adults, Brian aims to extract the best from the musicians and encourages them to invest themselves in making their best music.
