Melbourne Youth Orchestras (MYO) and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (MCM) are working in collaboration to improve music education and learning outcomes for Victorian students. This initiative has been designed to help MYO students excel in VCE Music and prepare for tertiary study.

We all know that Year 12 can be challenging time for students, so let us relieve some of the pressure and help to extend your music studies.

Audition early for the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music

MCM will be holding early auditions for MYO students, for provisional acceptance into the Melbourne Con. You’ll still need a good ATAR score but rest easy knowing your audition for entry to the Con is done and dusted.

Prelude Workshop Series

Throughout the year, MYO students in years 10, 11 and 12 will benefit from a series of workshops with renowned Melbourne Conservatorium of Music faculty and invited guests. Register for these workshops and gain access to world-class teaching and support.

Workshop One: Performance preparation and practice

Learn to manage your time well, practice efficiently and thoroughly to progress faster and further. Discover how to understand your own habits and routines, and learn new ways get the best from yourself in the practice room. Gain an understanding into your on-stage mental state, and discuss strategies on how to avoid compromising your own successful music performance.

Workshop Two: Masterclass 1 of 2

Prepare effectively to confidently deliver public concerts, recitals and performances. Perform for members of the MCM performance staff and receive feedback on instrumental technique, performance style, stage etiquette and more.

Workshop Three: Careers session

Learn about the multitude of career pathways that are possible in music. Discover the key ways to balance freelance work, such as performing and composing, alongside occupations with steadier employment, like teaching or arts management. Investigate the many tertiary pathways possible at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and how these can lead to a tailored career. This session may be delivered online.

Learn practice strategies to optimise your time in the practice room and get the best from yourself. Engage in the process of self-evaluation as a tool to aid your own development. Discuss ways to perform at your best in high pressure situations. This session may be delivered online.

All workshops will be held from 9.30am-12.30pm in the Kenneth Myer Auditorium of the Ian Potter Southbank Centre at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Southbank Campus unless otherwise informed.

Workshops are open to school students in years 10 to 12 who are members of the MYO 2020 Ensemble Program.
