Charrett String Orchestra

The Summer School Charrett String Orchestra is an ideal first ensemble experience for young string players, and for those who want to build their confidence surrounded by new friends.

This is a unique program, unlike any other in Victoria, where our team of tutors work all week with their section and lead daily tutorial sessions, giving each student individual attention and support. Above all, the Charrett String Orchestra is a great way to make new friends from all over Victoria.

Shanthi Charrett has worked as a string teacher and performing musician for almost 30 years. She has been teaching at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School since 2020 and prior to this Shanthi was the Head of Strings at Haileybury for 13 years. Throughout her time at Haileybury, her position encompassed the co-ordination of the String Program across the schools’ 5 Melbourne campuses, teaching students from Years 2 to 12, directing VCE Group Performance ensembles and other chamber groups as well as conducting numerous large ensembles from Junior, Middle and Senior School; including the Symphony Orchestra and Senior String Orchestra. In 2018 Shanthi co-ordinated Haileybury’s first European Music Tour, taking a string orchestra and choir to perform in the Summa Cum Laude Music festival in Vienna and its surrounds.
Some of Shanthi’s other school positions have included co-ordinating the String Program at Fintona Girls’ School, Head of Strings at Melbourne Girls’ Grammar School – Morris Hall, and Head of Strings at Geelong Grammar School – Glamorgan. Regularly invited to direct string orchestra workshops, assess students and provide professional development at schools in and around Melbourne, Shanthi has also conducted ensembles in numerous MYO Summer Schools and State Music Camps, conducting the Symphony Orchestra and Senior String Orchestra at Geelong Summer Music Camp in 2010.
