Quaine String Orchestra

Join our 2023 Summer School with a program designed to challenge advanced string players to further develop their technique, tone and ensemble skills with John Quaine.

Throughout the week, regular rotation of seating will ensure each participant gets extension and experiences a variety of roles within the ensemble, and for more advanced students, opportunities to take on solo lines and leadership experience.

John Quaine is a string specialist with over 40 years of experience as a performer, conductor and
educator. After violin studies with Elizabeth Gaunson, Paul McDermott and Christopher Martin, he
graduated from the University of Melbourne. An interest in conducting led to subsequent studies
with Robert Rosen, John Hopkins, Marvin Rabin and Carlo Felice Cilario. He plays violin and viola
and has had an extensive freelance performance career on modern and period instruments
playing with Geelong Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne Musicians, Melbourne Collegium, Australian
Pops Orchestra, Accademia Arcadia and St John’s Bach Orchestra. John has performed at
regional arts festivals such as Woodend Winter Arts Festival, Castlemaine State Festival, Organs
of the Ballarat Goldfields Festival and Peninsula Summer Music Festival. John has conducted at
State Music Camp, Geelong Summer Musica Camp, MYM Summer School, Melbourne String
Ensemble, St Kilda Chamber Ensemble, Kooyong Chamber Players, Education Department
combined regional workshops and as guest conductor at independent schools. For many years,
John worked with MYO (previously MYM) as a viola tutor and as conductor of the Margaret
Sutherland Strings. He has adjudicated many music competitions and eisteddfods throughout
Victoria and has conducted string workshops for AMUSE, AUSTA and ABODA. He and been a
participant and guest presenter at string festivals in UK, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia and
China. He has taught in both government and independent schools and for many years was Head
of Strings at Brighton Grammar School where he instigated and directed an innovative string
program. He is currently on staff at St Kevin’s College in Toorak where he teaches violin and viola and directs several string ensembles. He served on the AUSTA committee for twenty-five years including four years as Victorian State President and three years as National President. John is a string examiner and editorial consultant with AMEB.
