Mal is an accomplished and highly regarded jazz saxophonist with international and Australian performances at all major national festivals and venues. He has performed with artists including James Morrison, Don Burrows, Bob Sedergreen, Brian Brown, Ted Vining, Bernie McGann, Allan Browne and supported international artists including Branford Marsalis, BB King, Ray Charles, Phillip Morris Superband, David Sanborn, Nat Adderley and McCoy Tyner. He has twice toured nationally with blues legend Jimmy Witherspoon.
His international tours include the Malaysian Jazz Festival (1993) with Australian world-music ensemble ‘Art Attack’.
He was a finalist in the National Jazz Awards at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues (1995).
As Co-leader of the contemporary jazz band ‘Mistaken Identity’, he is the principal composer of music performed by the band. He has recorded and released four highly acclaimed albums with the CD “Just Perfect” receiving a nomination in the Jazz category of the APRA Awards (1994).
With extensive experience specialising in jazz, blues and improvisation, Mal is a highly regarded music educator with proven results in achieving high standards of performance from ensemble and stage bands at school curriculum and competition level including the James Morrison Scholarship at Generations in Jazz (Mt Gambier), Royal Southstreet and Melbourne Bands competitions.
Mal currently teaches at Balwyn High School as the Director of the Stage Band Program and still continue to teach at the Lauriston Howqua Campus.
