Virtuosity is a concerto soloist program offering future soloists the chance to learn from the best.
For any budding musician, learning and playing a concerto piece is considered to be an essential part of their education and a standard requirement for most orchestral job auditions. However, it is rare for young musicians to get the opportunity to rehearse and perform a concerto with a full-sized orchestra. Now in its fourth year, Virtuosity is a three-stage concert soloist development program in a competitive setting.
Virtuosity is more than a competition – participants have the chance to be mentored and gain an enriching educational experience. The opportunity to perform a solo part within the orchestral context allows a musician greater insight into the music and enhances their understanding of the work and their own performance. Virtuosity participants will learn the artistic differences and challenges of concerto playing alongside a full-sized orchestra, as well as the skills and tools of the music industry beyond the performance.
Virtuosity is the ideal springboard into professional concerto performance, participation in competitions and the development of advanced musician skills – both on and off stage.
Virtuosity takes part in three stages: online application, Semi-Final performance and the Grand Final. Throughout each stage, participants will be given support and guidance for them to be the best musician they can be.
Applicants must be Victorian residents, aged 15 – 25 years at 1 January, 2017. Applicants will need to choose a soloist piece or movement with orchestral accompaniment within the time limit of 15 minutes. That is a maximum of 15 minutes. Applicants should ensure the work is suitable for performance by Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra.
Recordings may be supplied as YouTube links, audio files, or on USB drive, recorded in a single take. It is not necessary to use an accompanist for the video recording.
