Melbourne Youth Orchestra is recognised as one of Australia’s leading youth orchestras, with many of our members advancing to professional careers. In Melbourne Youth Orchestra, you’ll join Victoria’s brightest young musicians, work with highly respected conductors and educators, and delve into advanced orchestral repertoire.

MELBOURNE YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Approximate standard: AMEB Grade 8+ or equivalent
Approximate age range: 15 – 25
Rehearsals: Saturday 1:30pm – 5:00pm
Instruments: Flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, french horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, timpani, piano, harp, violin, viola, cello, double bass.

Hillinger photoSTEVEN HILLINGER – Chief Conductor
A dedicated exponent of music education, Melbourne Youth Orchestra Chief Conductor Steven Hillinger’s dedication to youth music development has seen him conduct many youth orchestras throughout Australia. He has conducted MYO since 2016, and is also Musical Director of the University of New South Wales Symphony Orchestra, the North Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and North Sydney Girls High School Orchestras.

In demand as a guest conductor, Steven’s engagements have included Sydney Conservatorium Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, the Willoughby, Penrith and Mosman Symphony Orchestras, and Ku-ring-gai and East-West Philharmonic Orchestras.

Special projects* for Melbourne Youth Orchestra in 2018 include:

    • Melbourne Recital Centre’s MusicPlay Festival
    • Performance at a Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Sidney Myer Music Bowl Free Concert
    • Side-by-side performance with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne.

*Participation in Special projects is by invitation.
