In 2016 Melbourne Youth Orchestras hosted a Masterclass Series, comprising of four Masterclasses, each focusing on different instruments and rehearsal techniques, presented at different venues around Victoria.
The fourth Masterclass of 2016 focused on the French Horn and was held at The Victorian College of the Arts, The University of Melbourne, featuring Geoff Collinson. In this Masterclass, Geoff guided students through key aspects of instrumental performance, in front of a live audience – both in person and online. Both live and online audiences had the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with Geoff on any aspects of horn performance.

Geoff Collinson began his studies on the horn in Melbourne in 1979. In 1993 he moved to Canberra to study with Hector McDonald, one of Australia’s finest brass musicians who is currently principal horn of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. From 1983-1988, Geoff was a member of the Canberra Horn Consort and performed as a guest with many of Australia’s premier orchestras. In 1990, Geoff was awarded the position of Principal horn with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, a position he held until 2000. During this time he was also guest principal horn of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
In 2000 Geoff left orchestral life and Sydney to pursue his two great loves, teaching and his wife Zoe Knighton. He held the position of Head of Brass at the Faculty of Music, University of Melbourne from 2004 until 2007 and was founder and Co-Director of the Melbourne International Festival of Brass with Michael Bertoncello.
Geoff left musical life in 2007 and is currently CEO of Icestorm Digital Solutions which is working on two disruptive online projects in the music space.
