Triumph of the Human Spirit

Sunday 28 April 2024, 5:30 pm

Melbourne Youth Orchestra

Brett Kelly

Melbourne Recital Centre

A captivating folk-inspired program.

Infused throughout with joyous musical echoes of Russia’s religious and peasant past, Borodin’s popular Symphony No.2 is a bold and brilliant work; the perfect vehicle for MYO’s passionate young musicians.

Together with Sibelius’ Karelia Suite, it will create a concert overflowing with melody, pageantry, and power. Both works are much loved for capturing an exquisite balance of folk-like simplicity, dazzling orchestral sonority, and the sheer magic of the orchestral experience. It was said of Borodin and this work.

No musician has ever claimed immortality with so slender an offering. Yet if there be immortalities in music, his claim is incontestable.

Carlo Antonioli

Ulumbarra Theatre, Bendigo

Melbourne Youth Orchestra will be performing a regional outreach performance at Ulumbarra Theatre, Bendigo, underneath the baton of the brilliant conductor – Carlo Antonioli.

“Meaning ‘gather together’ or ‘meeting place’ in the language of the local Dja Dja Wurrung people, Bendigo’s Ulumbarra Theatre rises majestically from what was once the Sandhurst Gaol. The theatre is a redevelopment of the gaol, which operated from 1863 until 2004. Today you walk into an extraordinary arts and community facility and events venue that cleverly fuses heritage-listed 1860s penitentiary architecture and contemporary design.”

Celebrating film music’s evolution, from Max Steiner to Rachel Portman.

Over the past century, cinema has built a deep, magical, and unbreakable bond between its orchestral music and the human psyche. From the first wholly original film score written in 1932, every development in the concert hall has been immediately and creatively reflected in music for the movies.

The second half of this concert features the soaring mountain tops of film composition over the past 100 years, from the early luminaries Max Steiner and Erich Korngold to the greats of today, including Rachel Portman. MYO will revel in thrilling music from Gone with the Wind to Lord of the Rings and The Dark Knight and much more – all in all a feast of musical movie magic.
