Here’s a selection of answers to our most commonly asked questions…

APPLICATION FORM

I made a mistake on my application form.  What do I do?

Give us a call as soon as possible; we can amend your application form for you (03) 9376 8988. Please note that changes after audition times have been allocated will not be possible to accommodate.

I’ve missed the application closing date, can I still apply?

Due to the volume of applications we receive and the availability of our audition panel, we are unable to accept any late applications for the main round of auditions. However, where there are positions available, we may hold late auditions throughout the year. If a position is not available, we can put you on our waiting list and contact you if anything changes. Call our office to find out more (03) 9376 8988.

I didn’t receive my application confirmation or audition allocation email, what do I do?

This could be because of a few things:
1) The email may have made it into your junk mail. Check there first.
2) If your audition fee was not paid, your application would not have been finalised.
3) Your email address may have been entered with an error.

I don’t know what AMEB grade I am, what should I put on my application form?

The AMEB grades listed are your guide to the skill level required for each ensemble and are not a formal requirement. If you are not currently undertaking AMEB exams, consult with your teacher as they will know what equivalent standard you are, or call our office for further advice (03) 9376 8988.

Can I join multiple ensembles?

Yes members are able to play in more than one ensemble, provided they do not run concurrently. Call our office to find out how to apply and audition (03) 9376 8988.



AUDITION INFORMATION

I was in the Ensemble Program in 2016. Do I need to re-audition?

Yes, all positions in our Ensemble Program are declared vacant at the end of each year. All current members will re-audition for 2017. This ensures each individual is allocated to the best ensemble for their current stage of development.

I would like to audition on more than one instrument, what should I do?

Except for those playing auxiliary woodwind instruments, you will need to complete a second application form and pay for a separate audition. We will make every effort to schedule your two auditions as close together as possible.

Do I need an accompanist for my audition?

No, all auditions are performed unaccompanied; therefore an accompanist is neither required nor permitted.

Do I need to bring my own instrument?

With the exception of piano, members are expected to provide their own instrument. Percussion equipment required for audition excerpts will be supplied, however applicants should bring their own sticks and mallets and if any percussion instruments not included in the excerpts are required, please call us by Friday 11 November, 2016, so that we can make arrangements (03) 9376 8988.

What do I need to prepare for my audition?

Audition requirements vary by ensemble. Information with specific audition requirements will be sent to you via an automated email once you submit your application form. If you do not receive this information, call our office (03) 9376 8988.

How hard will the sight-reading be?

The sight-reading will be equivalent to the advertised standard of the ensemble you audition for. It helps the panel assess your music-reading abilities as well as any other musical abilities not yet determined in your audition.

How difficult should my own choice work be?

We recommend that you choose a piece/s that best represents your abilities at the time of your audition. There is no need to learn a new piece – you can play something you have already been working on. Talk to your instrumental teacher if you’re unsure. If you are preparing two works, we recommend selecting contrasting pieces to show off your musical versatility.

I can’t make my audition time, what do I do?

Firstly, email our office to notify us on myo@myo.org.au. Unfortunately, due to the volume of applicants and restricted panel availability, we are unable to change your audition time. Instead, we have the option for you to submit a recorded audition.



AUDITION RESULTS

How/when do I find out my audition results?

Results from auditions will be emailed to applicants on Friday 9 December, 2016. If you don’t receive this, please check your junk mail before getting in touch with the office so that we can check your details and resend your results. Remember to confirm your acceptance of any position offered, otherwise your place may be given to a reserve member in the second round of offers.

Can I get feedback from my audition panel?

Feedback from auditions is not available as information collected through the audition process is private and confidential. We are unable to enter into correspondence regarding an applicant’s specific audition result with the applicant, their parents or their teacher. You can also read our full Audition Policy.


AUDITION DAY

Can parents attend the audition?

Parents are very welcome to attend the audition venue, but we will ask you to remain outside during an applicant’s warm-up and audition. Applicants may be in a shared warm-up room so space is limited. Additionally, we find that applicants are better able to focus when left to their own preparation.  There will be a comfortable waiting room for parents, and feel free to bring a coffee!

How long will the audition go for?

The audition will last between 5 and 10 minutes. Due to the volume of auditions we hear, it is essential that applicants have arrived and are prepared prior to their allocated audition time. We make every effort to remain on time, but thank you for your patience should there be a small delay.

 


MEMBERSHIP FEES

What do my fees pay for?

In addition to the Conductor, each ensemble has its own dedicated Ensemble Coordinator and regular sessions with expert tutors. Music hire and venues can be quite costly as well as the work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly. Thanks to our supporters, your contribution is brought down to less than 50% of the actual cost – less than $9 per hour. What a bargain!

Are scholarships available?

Yes. Financial assistance is available for tertiary students, regional students and anybody who is experiencing financial difficulties. Each year there is a wide range of support available.  Details of scholarships and bursaries will be made available with offers for places, so we encourage you to apply for an audition regardless of your financial circumstances.
